Zephyrus Books Store Policies

We make every effort to keep our inventory up to date.  Occasionally an item is sold and we are not fast enough without updates to remove from our active stock.  All items are thus subject to availability.

Selling used books online is difficult in that the condition of a book is often hard to communicate fully.  While we try to be as accurate as possible, we will inevitably omit certain details or make an outright mistake.

We follow the IOBA standard in grading our books.  These may be viewed HERE, as well as at the bottom of this page.

Payment is accepted via PayPal, checks, and cash. Major credit cards can be used via PayPal.  If paying with check or money order please make it payable to "John Sweeney."  If you have any difficulties with the checkout please contact us.

We try to keep shipping charges as low as possible.  Within the United States, the cheapest method is to use media mail.  We offer a flat $3.95 shipping option for media mail shipping, regardless of the number of items ordered.  Orders totaling $50 or more are eligible for free media mail shipping within the United States.

Be aware that we ship from New York State, and media mail shipping can take a long time for distant locales such as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and many APO addresses.

Other shipping options are available.  If you are placing a large international order or want Priority Shipping within the US, please contact us for an accurate quote.  Often shipping can be lower than the checkout calculator comes up with.

Certain very large or very heavy items cannot ship at the usual rates (other than Media Mail) and we will in these cases need to contact you to see if the charges are agreeable.  Instances of this would be large books going Air Mail or large sets shipping Priority Mail.

Returns are accepted.  A full refund will be given for any item other than our Bargain Books, which may have some costs associated with the return (please see below).

Generally, shipping charges are not refundable.  In the case of a mis-described book, Zephyrus Books will also refund the shipping charges.  This determination is at the discretion of the store.

In the case of a multi-book order where shipping was reduced or eliminated, shipping shall not be refunded unless the entire order was flawed.  Again, this shall be determined by the store.

Bargain Books

Our Bargain Books are not a money maker for us.  These are books which are not usually worthwhile selling online, but which people may looking for.  Included here are common paperbacks, books with a lot of wear or other flaws, or interesting old volumes that may be of interest only to a few people.

We offer these at a standard price of $1.00 per book.  They are eligible for the same shipping rates as everything else.  The only difference is that we may not refund shipping on returns, as the cost of returning them will cause everyone involved to lose money.

So if you have a question about one of these books, or you cannot live with indicated conditions such as torn jackets, writing or lots of creases, please do not order them.  If you have a question about the condition of one of these please contact the store.  We have tried to note all major flaws for each book.

IOBA Condition Description Definitions

For many years, the grading system defined by AB Bookman (now sadly defunct) was the standard in the antiquarian book trade. IOBA's standards, listed below, do not fundamentally differ from those standards though they have been expanded upon, and defined a bit more specifically.

(Condition normally shown as __/__, i.e., F/F, denoting first book & then dustjacket condition)

AS NEW (AN) or VERY FINE (VF) or MINT (M): Without faults or defects, unread, in the same immaculate condition in which it was published (Note: very few "new" books qualify for this grade, as many times there will be rubs/scuffs to the dustjackets from shipping, or bumped lower spine ends/corners from shelving).

FINE (F): Approaches the above, but not crisp. May have been carefully read and dustjacket may have been slightly rubbed or spine ends slightly bumped from shelving/shipping, but no real defects or faults.

(NOTE: From here on, there may be "+" and "-" in a grade, which will mean that it is above the grade noted but not quite to the next higher grade for "+", and that it is below the grade noted but not quite to the next lower grade for "-".

NEAR FINE: Also used, although not contained in Bookman's Weekly definitions, meaning a book or dustjacket approaching FINE but with a couple of very minor defects or faults.

VERY GOOD: A used book showing some small signs of wear on either binding or dustjacket. Any defects/faults must be noted.

GOOD: The average used and worn book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects must be noted.

FAIR: A worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title page, etc. (which must be noted). Binding, dustjacket, etc. may also be worn. All defects/faults must be noted.

POOR or READING COPY: A book that is sufficiently worn that its only merit is the complete text, which must be legible. Any missing maps or plates should still be noted. May be soiled, scuffed, stained, or spotted, and may have loose joints, hinges, pages, etc.

EX-LIBRARY: Must always be designated as such no matter what the condition of the book.

BOOK CLUB: Must always be noted as such no matter what the condition of the book.

BINDING COPY: A book in which the pages or leaves are perfect but the binding is very bad, loose, off, or non-existent.

Always, if issued with one, the lack of a dustjacket or slipcase should be noted.
